The Qemists – Drop Audio / Stompbox (Spor Remix)

Released in 2007 on Ninja Tune, Drop Audio / Stompbox (Spor Remix) is a heavyweight two-track 12" showcasing The Qemists at their most explosive. Issued as catalogue ZEN12205, the release pairs the original "Drop Audio", featuring MC I.D., with Spor's high-impact remix of "Stompbox". Both tracks were released on 12 November 2007.

"Drop Audio" demonstrates the distinctive sound that made The Qemists stand out within the UK drum & bass scene. The Brighton group combined the speed and intensity of drum & bass with live drums, guitar, bass and the aggression of rock music, creating a powerful crossover sound that sat somewhere between drum & bass, breakbeat and electronic rock. Ninja Tune itself described the group as musicians equally comfortable with live instruments and computer production.

Featuring MC I.D., "Drop Audio" is driven by hard-hitting breakbeats, huge bass and an aggressive vocal performance. Running at around 174 BPM, it has the full-throttle energy associated with The Qemists' early productions, while retaining the precision and rhythmic detail of UK drum & bass.

On the flip, Spor completely reworks "Stompbox" into a ferocious piece of neurofunk-leaning drum & bass. Running at around 172 BPM, the remix pushes the track towards darker bass pressure, relentless drums and a more stripped-back electronic intensity. It became one of the best-known versions of "Stompbox" and helped establish both The Qemists and Spor as major names within the heavier end of the late-2000s D&B scene.

The release arrived during an important period for both artists. The Qemists had developed their sound by combining their background as rock musicians with a growing obsession with drum & bass, while Spor was emerging as one of the most exciting producers in the neurofunk and techstep scene. The result is a particularly strong meeting point between live-band aggression and heavyweight electronic production.

For collectors and DJs looking for classic 2000s drum & bass vinyl, Drop Audio / Stompbox (Spor Remix) is a standout Ninja Tune release. With the original "Drop Audio" backed by Spor's acclaimed remix of "Stompbox", it is an essential choice for fans of The Qemists, Spor, neurofunk, breakbeat, electronic rock and heavyweight UK drum & bass.
