The Specials – Specials
The Specials – Specials
Originally released in October 1979, The Specials is the landmark debut album from Coventry's The Specials and one of the most important records to emerge from the British ska revival. A defining statement of the Two Tone movement, the album brought together the infectious rhythms of Jamaican ska and rocksteady with the raw energy, urgency and attitude of British punk, creating a distinctive sound that would influence generations of musicians and help reshape the British music scene.
Formed around the creative vision of keyboardist and songwriter Jerry Dammers, The Specials featured Terry Hall, Neville Staple, Lynval Golding, Roddy Radiation, Horace Panter and John Bradbury. Their music combined sharp social commentary, dancefloor rhythms, stripped-back arrangements and an unmistakable sense of urban tension. The band's black-and-white visual identity and association with the Two Tone label became equally significant, representing a multicultural musical movement that challenged racial divisions and brought ska back into the British mainstream.
Produced by Elvis Costello, the album captures the group at their most direct and compelling. Its tight rhythm section, infectious offbeat guitar, prominent keyboards, punchy horns and distinctive vocal delivery create a sound that is simultaneously celebratory, rebellious and frequently unsettling. Beneath the irresistible grooves, many of the songs reflect the frustrations of working-class life, unemployment, social division and the realities of late-1970s Britain.
The opening 'A Message To You Rudy', featuring the unmistakable trombone of Jamaican musician Rico Rodriguez, is a superb reworking of Dandy Livingstone's rocksteady classic, setting the tone for the album's blend of Jamaican musical heritage and British punk attitude. 'Do The Dog' and 'Nite Klub' deliver infectious ska rhythms with a distinctly confrontational edge, while 'It's Up To You' and 'Doesn't Make It Alright' demonstrate the band's ability to combine memorable melodies with thoughtful, socially conscious songwriting.
'Concrete Jungle' is one of the album's defining moments, its tense atmosphere and urgent rhythm capturing the frustrations of inner-city Britain. Elsewhere, 'Too Hot' brings a classic ska influence, while the band's energetic interpretation of Toots & The Maytals' 'Monkey Man' is an irresistible celebration of Jamaican music.
The second half continues with the politically charged '(Dawning Of A) New Era', the darkly atmospheric 'Blank Expression' and the sharp humour of 'Stupid Marriage'. 'Too Much Too Young' is a particular highlight, an extended and uncompromising ska anthem that became one of the defining recordings of the Two Tone era. The album closes with 'Little Bitch' and 'You're Wondering Now', the latter drawing on the classic Jamaican ska repertoire.
An enormously influential debut, The Specials helped establish Two Tone as one of the most important independent musical movements in British history, alongside fellow label acts including The Selecter and Madness. Its combination of Jamaican ska, rocksteady, punk energy and incisive social observation makes it an essential recording for fans of ska, reggae, punk, new wave and classic British independent music.
This is a cornerstone album of the 1979 ska revival and an essential addition to any collection of classic British music.
