The Swingalongs – Sing A Song Of Christmas

A wonderfully kitsch slice of early-seventies festive easy listening, Sing A Song Of Christmas brings twenty much-loved Christmas songs and carols together in a pair of continuous medleys. Originally released in 1973 on the budget-friendly Music For Pleasure label, this cheerful seasonal collection gives familiar favourites a lively, swinging makeover.

Arranged and directed by Alan Moorhouse and produced by Bill Wellings, the album draws on the same creative team behind Tijuana Christmas, and has a distinctive vintage lounge-pop character. Bright vocal harmonies sit alongside jaunty arrangements, with brass, keyboards and percussion adding plenty of festive sparkle. From the upbeat opening of “Jingle Bells” through traditional carols and hymns, the performances have an unmistakably nostalgic charm.

The two sides move briskly through a generous selection of seasonal standards. “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen”, “The Holly And The Ivy” and “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” feature in the first-side medley, while the second brings together timeless favourites including “Silent Night”, “Away In A Manger”, “The First Nowell” and “O Come All Ye Faithful”.

An entertaining Christmas record with a distinctly retro British feel, ideal for collectors of vintage seasonal albums, easy-listening curiosities and wonderfully dated festive sounds. Put it on, turn up the tree lights and let the Swingalongs provide the soundtrack.
