Tom Waits – Swordfishtrombones
Tom Waits – Swordfishtrombones
Originally released in 1983 on Island Records, Swordfishtrombones is the landmark eighth studio album by Tom Waits and one of the defining records of his career. Recorded at Sunset Sound in Hollywood in 1982, the album represented a dramatic transformation in Waits' musical approach, replacing much of the conventional piano-based sound of his earlier work with an eccentric combination of horns, percussion, organ, unusual instrumentation and deliberately rough-edged arrangements.
The album opens with "Underground", immediately establishing the strange, theatrical atmosphere that runs throughout the record. "Shore Leave", "Dave The Butcher" and "Johnsburg, Illinois" move between dark cabaret, experimental jazz and intimate piano-led songwriting, while "16 Shells From A Thirty-Ought-Six" introduces a more aggressive, rhythm-driven sound. Town With No Cheer and In The Neighborhood continue the album's fascination with eccentric characters, battered environments and vividly drawn American landscapes.
Much of what makes Swordfishtrombones so distinctive is the unusual instrumentation. Waits uses low brass, percussion, marimba, organ, harmonium, banjo, guitar and unconventional textures to create arrangements that feel closer to strange miniature soundtracks than conventional rock songs. The album's musicians include Larry Taylor, Victor Feldman, Fred Tackett, Stephen Hodges, Greg Cohen and Joe Romano, with recording engineer Biff Dawes helping to capture the deliberately raw and unconventional sonic character.
The second side contains some of Waits' most memorable compositions. "Frank's Wild Years" is a darkly comic character portrait, while the title track "Swordfishtrombone" combines surreal storytelling with a fractured marching rhythm. "Down, Down, Down", "Soldier's Things" and "Gin Soaked Boy" move between abrasive experimental arrangements and surprisingly vulnerable moments, before "Trouble's Braids" and the instrumental "Rainbirds" bring the album to an atmospheric close.
Swordfishtrombones is particularly significant because it marked the beginning of a new creative period for Waits. The album was his first to be produced by Waits himself, with Kathleen Brennan credited as co-producer, and its radically different approach established the musical language that would develop further on Rain Dogs and Franks Wild Years. Island's own description of the album highlights the transition from Waits' earlier 1970s sound towards a much more experimental, deliberately constructed form of songwriting and sound design.
For collectors of Tom Waits, experimental rock, alternative singer-songwriters, avant-garde music, blues, jazz and American roots music, Swordfishtrombones is an essential album. Tracks such as "Underground," "16 Shells From A Thirty-Ought-Six," "In The Neighborhood," "Soldier's Things" and "Swordfishtrombone" demonstrate the extraordinary shift in Waits' music during the early 1980s, combining his gravelly vocal delivery and surreal storytelling with an entirely new and highly individual musical vocabulary.
