Released in March 1976, Wings At The Speed Of Sound is the fifth studio album by Wings and one of the defining records of Paul McCartney's hugely successful post-Beatles career. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, the album captures Wings at the height of their popularity, combining melodic pop-rock, classic rock, soft rock and McCartney's unmistakable songwriting style.

The album is particularly notable for giving the whole Wings line-up a more prominent role. Alongside Paul McCartney, the record features Linda McCartney, Denny Laine, Jimmy McCulloch and Joe English, with each member contributing a lead vocal performance. Denny Laine takes the lead on “The Note You Never Wrote” and “Time To Hide”, Jimmy McCulloch sings “Wino Junko”, Linda McCartney takes the lead on “Cook Of The House”, while Joe English provides the vocal on “Must Do Something About It”.

The album opens with the instantly recognisable “Let ’Em In”, a sophisticated and deceptively simple McCartney pop song that became a major international hit, reaching No. 2 in the UK and No. 3 in the US. It is followed by the atmospheric “The Note You Never Wrote” and the energetic “She’s My Baby”, before the hard-rocking “Beware My Love”, one of the album's most powerful performances.

Side B contains the album's biggest commercial success, “Silly Love Songs”. Written by Paul and Linda McCartney, the track became a huge US No. 1 hit and is now regarded as one of Wings' signature recordings. Its polished production, prominent bass line, orchestral touches and disco-influenced rhythm demonstrate McCartney's ability to absorb contemporary musical trends without losing his melodic identity.

Elsewhere, “Wino Junko” gives guitarist Jimmy McCulloch a rare lead-vocal spotlight, while “Time To Hide”, “Must Do Something About It”, “San Ferry Anne” and “Warm And Beautiful” help give the album a genuine band feel rather than making it sound like another McCartney solo project. The result is an accessible and varied 1970s rock album that sits comfortably alongside Band On The Run and Venus And Mars in the essential Wings catalogue.

Wings At The Speed Of Sound was another major commercial success for the group, reaching No. 2 in the UK and topping the US album chart. Released while Wings were embarking on their hugely successful Wings Over The World period, it remains an essential piece of 1970s British rock and a particularly desirable vinyl LP for fans of Paul McCartney, The Beatles and classic rock.
