Wishbone Ash – Wishbone Ash
Wishbone Ash – Wishbone Ash
Released in 1970, Wishbone Ash is the remarkable self-titled debut album from the British rock band that would go on to become pioneers of the twin lead guitar sound. Blending blues, progressive rock, jazz influences, and hard rock, the album laid the foundations for a style that would inspire generations of musicians, including bands such as Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy, and countless classic rock acts.
Featuring the legendary guitar partnership of Andy Powell and Ted Turner, Wishbone Ash introduced audiences to the band's rich harmonies, melodic dual-guitar interplay, and adventurous songwriting. Supported by the powerful rhythm section of Martin Turner (bass, vocals) and Steve Upton (drums), the album combines blues-rooted improvisation with progressive ambition, creating a sound that was both distinctive and ahead of its time.
The album opens with Blind Eye, immediately showcasing the band's signature guitar harmonies before moving into the blues-infused Lady Whiskey. Errors Of My Ways explores a more reflective, folk-influenced direction, while Queen Of Torture injects a harder-edged rock energy to close Side A. Side B is devoted to two expansive compositions that have become fan favourites: the dynamic Handy, which effortlessly shifts between blues, jazz, and rock passages, and the epic Phoenix, a soaring ten-minute instrumental showcase that remains one of Wishbone Ash's defining recordings and a highlight of their live performances.
Although later albums such as Argus would bring the band widespread acclaim, Wishbone Ash remains an essential debut that perfectly captures the group's originality and musical vision. A must-have for fans of progressive rock, blues rock, and classic British guitar music, this album is a cornerstone of any serious vinyl collection.
