Woody Herman And The Las Vegas Herd – Jackpot!
Woody Herman And The Las Vegas Herd – Jackpot!
Released in 1956 on Capitol Records, Jackpot! finds bandleader Woody Herman fronting a stripped-down, hard-swinging octet dubbed the Las Vegas Herd. Recorded on 1st December 1955, the session captures a tighter, more intimate side of Herman's big band sound, built around a stellar lineup of West Coast jazz talent.
Joined by tenor saxophonist Richie Kamuca, bass trumpeter Cy Touff, and drummer Chuck Flores, Herman leads the group through a set of swinging standards and original compositions with real punch and drive. Highlights include the driving opener 920 Special, a spirited run through Count Basie's Jumpin' At The Woodside, and the relaxed groove of Bags' Other Groove, showcasing the octet's tight interplay and small-group chemistry.
A fine example of mid-50s West Coast jazz from one of the genre's most enduring bandleaders, Jackpot! is essential listening for collectors of swing-era jazz, small combo recordings, and the golden age of Capitol Records.
