ZZ Top – Fandango!

Fandango! is the fourth studio album from ZZ Top, originally released in 1975, and one of the defining records of the band's classic 1970s period. Blending Texas blues, boogie, Southern rock and hard rock, the album showcases the stripped-back power of Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard at their rawest and most energetic.

The album is particularly distinctive because it combines live recordings on Side A with studio material on Side B, giving Fandango! a unique character among ZZ Top's early releases. The live performances capture the trio's famously tight, no-frills approach, while the studio side demonstrates the songwriting, groove and guitar tone that would become central to their later success.

Side A gets underway with the swaggering Thunderbird, before ZZ Top launch into their energetic live version of Elvis Presley's Jailhouse Rock. The centrepiece is the extended Backdoor Medley, bringing together Backdoor Love Affair, Mellow Down Easy, Backdoor Love Affair No. 2 and Long Distance Boogie in a powerful showcase for Gibbons' blues guitar playing.

The studio-recorded Side B opens with the funky Nasty Dogs And Funky Kings, followed by the slow-burning blues of Blue Jean Blues, one of the album's standout tracks. Balinese provides a more atmospheric instrumental interlude, while Mexican Blackbird brings a distinctly Texas-flavoured boogie-rock feel.

The side continues with the driving Heard It On The X, a tribute to the Mexican border radio stations that broadcast rock and roll into Texas, before closing with Tush – one of ZZ Top's most enduring songs and a genuine 1970s blues-rock classic. The track became a major hit for the band and remains a staple of their live repertoire.

Produced by Bill Ham, Fandango! arrived as ZZ Top were rapidly establishing themselves as one of America's premier blues-rock power trios. Its combination of crunching guitar, deep bass grooves, hard-driving drums and Texas blues attitude helped define the band's sound before their enormous commercial breakthrough in the 1980s.

For collectors of ZZ Top vinyl, 1970s blues rock, Texas boogie and Southern rock, Fandango! is an essential addition. It's particularly suited to fans of Lynyrd Skynyrd, George Thorogood, Foghat, Canned Heat and the Allman Brothers Band.

A superb example of ZZ Top's early sound, Fandango! captures the band at their most raw, bluesy and groove-driven, combining the atmosphere of a live ZZ Top show with some of their strongest studio material.
