24-7 Spyz – Harder Than You
24-7 Spyz – Harder Than You
Harder Than You is the explosive debut album from 24-7 Spyz, the influential New York band who developed a distinctive fusion of funk, heavy metal, punk, reggae and hardcore. Originally released in 1988, the album captures the group's raw, genre-defying approach and their place within the emerging alternative metal and crossover scene.
Formed in the Bronx in the mid-1980s, 24-7 Spyz became known for refusing to stay within the boundaries of a single genre. Their music combined the heavy guitar riffs and aggression of metal and hardcore with funk rhythms, reggae grooves and an unmistakable New York street sensibility. Harder Than You is an excellent introduction to the sound that would make the band cult favourites among fans of adventurous alternative music.
The album opens with the furious Grandma Dynamite, before moving through the instrumental energy of Jimi'z Jam and the funk-metal groove of Spyz Dope. Social Plague brings a darker, heavier edge, while I Must Go On and Ballots Not Bullets demonstrate the band's willingness to combine politically charged themes with their muscular, rhythm-driven sound.
Side B begins with a funky interpretation of Jungle Boogie, followed by the aggressive Spill My Guts and reggae-influenced Sponji Reggae. The brilliantly eccentric Tango Skin Polka highlights the band's experimental streak, before Pillage and New Drug bring the album to a suitably hard-hitting conclusion.
What makes Harder Than You particularly interesting is the way 24-7 Spyz anticipated the genre-blurring alternative metal movement that would become increasingly prominent during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Their combination of funk, metal, hardcore, reggae and punk helped establish a blueprint later explored by bands across the crossover and funk-metal scenes.
For collectors of 24-7 Spyz vinyl, Harder Than You is an essential piece of New York alternative music history. It's particularly recommended for fans of Living Colour, Fishbone, Bad Brains, Faith No More, Primus and early crossover metal.
A raw, energetic and genuinely adventurous record, Harder Than You remains a fascinating example of the late-1980s underground where funk, punk, reggae and heavy music collided.
