Aled Jones – Walking In The Air

Aled Jones – Walking In The Air

One of the most recognisable Christmas recordings of the 1980s, Aled Jones' version of 'Walking In The Air' captures the magical atmosphere of the much-loved animated film The Snowman. Released as a 12-inch single in 1985, this memorable recording showcases the young Welsh singer's pure, expressive boy-soprano voice on Howard Blake's beautifully evocative composition.

Originally written by Blake for the 1982 animated film, 'Walking In The Air' accompanies the unforgettable flying sequence in which the boy and the snowman soar through the night sky. The vocal in the original film was performed by Peter Auty, while Aled Jones recorded his own version in 1985. His interpretation became a major hit, reaching number five on the UK Singles Chart during the Christmas period and helping establish the song as a seasonal favourite.

Jones was just fourteen when his recording brought him widespread attention. Its success was closely tied to the enduring popularity of The Snowman, but the performance stands on its own: a delicate, heartfelt delivery that brings out the song's sense of wonder, nostalgia and gentle melancholy. Howard Blake's memorable melody and atmospheric arrangement give the recording its distinctive cinematic quality.

This 12-inch edition offers an extended 6:45 version of 'Walking In The Air' on the A-side, alongside an alternative version on the reverse. The longer mix gives the composition additional space to unfold, making this a particularly appealing format for fans of the recording and collectors of classic 1980s Christmas releases.

A nostalgic seasonal favourite and an enduring piece of British Christmas pop culture, Aled Jones' 'Walking In The Air' remains closely associated with the magic of The Snowman. Recommended for fans of Christmas music, traditional pop, choral vocals, film themes and classic 1980s UK singles.
