A warm, soulful and sun-soaked fusion of Afro-influenced house, disco, boogie and funk, Bunny Chow brings together UK deep-house producer Andy Compton and South African guitarist and musician Shamrock for a beautifully organic four-track 12" release. Originally released in 2018 on Lumberjacks In Hell, the record captures the duo's shared love of groove-driven music and their connection to South Africa. Contemporary descriptions of the release highlight its laid-back funk, Afro influences and "sunlight drenched boogie" sound.
Andy Compton is best known as the founder and driving force behind The Rurals, the influential UK deep-house project renowned for blending soulful house with jazz, funk and organic instrumentation. Shamrock brings a distinctly African musical sensibility to the collaboration, with the pair having first met and begun working together in Johannesburg in 2015.
The title track Bunny Chow immediately sets the tone with a laid-back Afro groove, warm guitar textures and an infectious rhythmic pulse. The track features vocals from Asli, adding a soulful dimension to the production, while the combination of organic instrumentation and understated electronic production gives the record its distinctive warmth.
Everything Is Gravy moves into a more downtempo, soulful space, with Asli's vocals sitting beautifully over the relaxed groove. On the flip, Nifanyeje brings a stronger Afro-disco feel, driven by crisp drum-machine rhythms and expressive guitar lines, before Roga Mziki closes the record with another infectious, feel-good groove.
The release is particularly appealing to collectors of deep house, Afro house, disco, boogie, soulful house and organic dance music, sitting comfortably between the worlds of underground club music and warm, live-instrument-led groove.
