Badger – One Live Badger
Badger – One Live Badger
Released in 1973, One Live Badger is the debut album by British progressive rock band Badger, a group whose connections to Yes place them firmly within the early-1970s British prog scene. Featuring former Yes keyboardist Tony Kaye, alongside bassist and vocalist David Foster, guitarist and vocalist Brian Parrish, and drummer Roy Dyke, the album captures a band developing its own identity through extended compositions, muscular rhythms and expansive instrumental interplay.
Rather than beginning with a studio album, Badger introduced themselves with a live recording made at London's Rainbow Theatre on 15 and 16 December 1972, where they performed as the opening act for Yes. The concerts were part of the same period in which Yes were documenting their live performances for the Yessongs album and concert film. Badger's debut preserves the energy of the stage show while showcasing six original compositions across a set that moves between progressive rock, blues-influenced songwriting and more reflective passages. The album was produced by Badger, Yes vocalist Jon Anderson and engineer Geoffrey Haslam.
Tony Kaye's keyboard work is central to the record's sound. His Hammond organ, Mellotron and synthesiser textures bring a distinctly progressive dimension to the arrangements, while Parrish's guitar and Foster's bass and vocals give the music a more earthy, blues-rooted character. Roy Dyke's drumming supplies the rhythmic drive that holds the longer pieces together. The result is a sound that connects with the adventurous spirit of early-1970s British progressive rock without relying solely on the grandiose arrangements often associated with the genre.
The opening track, “Wheel Of Fortune,” establishes the band's live presence with an extended rock arrangement, while “Fountain” develops a more measured atmosphere. “Wind Of Change” is a particular highlight for listeners drawn to the interplay between keyboards, guitar and rhythm section, building its character through instrumental development rather than conventional pop-song brevity.
On the second side, “River” continues the album's expansive approach, while “The Preacher,” written by Brian Parrish, provides a shorter, more direct contrast. The set closes with “On The Way Home,” an extended performance that rounds out the album's mixture of melodic songwriting and progressive instrumental passages.
The visual presentation is also closely associated with the British progressive rock aesthetic of the period. The original album artwork was designed and illustrated by Roger Dean, the celebrated artist whose work became synonymous with Yes and other major names in progressive music. His involvement reinforces the album's place within the wider musical and visual culture of early-1970s prog.
For fans of Yes, classic British progressive rock, Hammond-organ-led rock and live albums that capture a band stretching beyond standard song structures, One Live Badger offers an engaging snapshot of a short-lived but musically significant group. It is particularly interesting for listeners exploring Tony Kaye's career beyond Yes and the wider network of musicians who helped shape the progressive rock landscape of the era.
