Bee Gees – Best Of Bee Gees

Bee Gees – Best Of Bee Gees is a superb collection of the group's early international hits, bringing together recordings from the late 1960s and early 1970s, long before the Bee Gees became synonymous with the disco era. This expansive compilation showcases Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb as gifted songwriters and vocalists, moving between melodic pop, folk-rock, orchestral ballads and psychedelic-influenced sounds.

The collection features many of the Bee Gees' best-known early songs, including "Holiday", "I've Gotta Get A Message To You", "Words" and "I Started A Joke". These songs demonstrate the group's extraordinary gift for layered harmonies and emotionally direct songwriting, with the distinctive voices of Barry and Robin Gibb providing much of the character of their early recordings.

Side A also includes "Spicks And Specks", the breakthrough Australian hit that helped establish the Bee Gees before their international success. "I Can't See Nobody" adds a darker, more dramatic edge, while "You Met Your Match" and the other selections illustrate the remarkable variety of their early catalogue.

The second disc continues with classics including "First Of May", "World", "Massachusetts", "To Love Somebody" and "New York Mining Disaster 1941". The latter became one of the group's first major international hits, while "To Love Somebody" has since become one of the Bee Gees' most enduring compositions, covered by artists across soul, rock and pop.

The final two sides broaden the collection further with "Let There Be Love", "I.O.I.O.", "Don't Forget To Remember", "Saved By The Bell", "Lamplight", "One Million Years", "August October", "Lonely Days" and "Tomorrow Tomorrow".

This is an excellent collection for anyone interested in the pre-disco Bee Gees, capturing the group's sophisticated songwriting, close vocal harmonies and richly arranged 1960s pop sound. For collectors of Bee Gees, classic pop, 1960s rock, baroque pop and early-1970s singer-songwriter music, Best Of Bee Gees offers a fascinating overview of the group's formative years.
