Betty Boo – Boomania Picture Disc LP

A brilliantly colourful slice of early-1990s British pop, Betty Boo – Boomania is the debut studio album from one of the era's most distinctive pop-rap stars. Originally released in September 1990 through Rhythm King Records, Boomania combines catchy dance-pop, pop-rap, house, synth-pop and electronic production with Betty Boo's instantly recognisable vocals and playful personality. The album reached No. 4 in the UK Albums Chart, establishing Boo as one of Britain's most memorable new pop artists of the period.

Following her earlier work with the dance group The Koo? and her appearances with The Beatmasters, Betty Boo developed a distinctive style that brought together hip-hop, house, pop and retro soul influences. Much of Boomania was produced alongside King John, with contributions from The Beatmasters, William Orbit and other notable studio figures, giving the record an energetic and varied production style that perfectly captures the crossover dance-pop sound of 1990.

The album features several of Betty Boo's best-known tracks, including the infectious “Doin' The Do”, which became a major international hit, and “Where Are You Baby?”, which reached No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart. Also included is “Hey DJ / I Can't Dance (To That Music You're Playing)”, a collaboration with The Beatmasters that reworks the Martha Reeves and the Vandellas song into a distinctly late-'80s/early-'90s dance-pop setting.

Other highlights such as “Boo Is Booming,” “Boo's Boogie,” “24 Hours,” “Valentine's Day” and “Leave Me Alone” demonstrate the playful production and infectious hooks that run throughout Boomania. With Betty Boo handling much of the writing and production alongside her collaborators, the album has a strong sense of personality that separates it from more conventional dance-pop releases of the era.

This particular edition is especially desirable for collectors: the limited-edition UK picture disc LP features Betty Boo imagery on one side and comic-style artwork on the other. Issued as LEFTLP12P, it is a striking alternative to the standard Boomania vinyl edition and a fantastic example of the colourful picture-disc culture surrounding pop releases around the turn of the 1990s.

For collectors of Betty Boo, 1990s pop, British dance music, pop-rap, synth-pop and picture disc vinyl, Boomania is an essential release — and this limited picture disc edition makes it an especially eye-catching addition to any collection.
