Black Sabbath – Paranoid

Released in 1970, Paranoid is one of the defining albums in the history of heavy metal, capturing Black Sabbath at the point where their dark, heavy sound became a major force in British rock. Building on the ominous atmosphere of their self-titled debut, the Birmingham band delivered a landmark collection of crushing guitar riffs, thunderous rhythms and lyrics exploring war, alienation, mental turmoil and the anxieties of modern life.

Featuring vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward, Black Sabbath developed a distinctive musical language rooted in blues-rock but shaped by unusually heavy guitar tones, ominous chord progressions and a powerful sense of atmosphere. Iommi's instantly recognisable riffs, Butler's socially conscious lyrics and the group's dynamic interplay helped establish a template that would influence generations of heavy metal, doom metal and hard rock musicians.

Originally released in the UK in September 1970 on Vertigo Records, Paranoid followed the band's debut by only a few months. Its impact was immediate, and the album became a cornerstone of the emerging heavy metal movement. Although the title track became the band's best-known hit, the record's strength lies in the variety of its eight compositions, which balance direct, riff-driven songwriting with darker, more exploratory passages.

“War Pigs” opens the album with a dramatic, extended arrangement that builds from an ominous introduction into one of Iommi's most celebrated riffs. Butler's lyrics condemn the brutality and manipulation of war, giving the track a political edge that distinguishes it from more conventional hard rock of the period. “Paranoid” follows with a compact burst of relentless guitar, bass and drums. Written quickly during the album sessions, the song became one of heavy metal's most recognisable anthems.

The mood shifts with “Planet Caravan,” a hazy, psychedelic excursion featuring softly delivered vocals and atmospheric instrumentation. Its spacious sound provides a striking contrast to the muscular attack of “Iron Man,” whose lumbering riff and science-fiction narrative have become enduring touchstones of heavy metal. The album's second half maintains the intensity with “Electric Funeral,” a bleak vision of nuclear destruction, and “Hand Of Doom,” a longer, more complex composition addressing drug addiction and its consequences.

“Rat Salad” gives the band room to stretch instrumentally, with a prominent drum feature from Bill Ward, before “Fairies Wear Boots” closes the album with another memorable riff, shifting rhythms and a characteristically surreal lyrical perspective. Across the record, Black Sabbath demonstrate an ability to move between concise, instantly memorable songs and extended compositions that explore darker musical territory.

More than five decades after its release, Paranoid remains essential listening for fans of classic heavy metal, hard rock and the roots of doom metal. Its combination of iconic riffs, uncompromising heaviness and socially aware songwriting makes it a landmark recording for both new listeners and seasoned collectors of classic rock vinyl.
