Caravan – If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You

Released in September 1970, If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You is the second studio album by British progressive rock band Caravan and one of the defining recordings of the Canterbury scene. Blending melodic songwriting with jazz-influenced rhythms, intricate instrumental passages and a distinctly English sense of humour, the album captures the band developing the adventurous musical identity that would make them one of the most enduring names in British progressive rock.

Formed in Canterbury in 1968, Caravan emerged from the same fertile musical environment as Soft Machine, sharing an interest in experimentation while retaining a warmer, more melodic approach. The band's characteristic sound combines Pye Hastings' expressive guitar work and vocals with David Sinclair's swirling organ and piano, Richard Sinclair's fluid bass playing and distinctive voice, and Richard Coughlan's inventive drumming. Flute and saxophone contributions from Jimmy Hastings add further colour, bringing jazz and classical influences into the band's expansive arrangements.

The opening title track establishes the album's distinctive balance of infectious melody, shifting rhythms and swirling keyboard work. “And I Wish I Were Stoned – Don't Worry” moves between relaxed, pastoral songwriting and more exploratory instrumental passages, while “As I Feel I Die” demonstrates the band's ability to combine an accessible vocal melody with increasingly elaborate arrangements.

One of the album's central achievements is “With An Ear To The Ground You Can Make It – Martinian – Only Cox – Reprise”, an extended multi-part composition that moves through contrasting musical themes and instrumental sections. Its changing rhythms, melodic development and interplay between guitar and keyboards illustrate Caravan's ability to make progressive rock feel fluid and organic rather than merely technical.

The second side continues this adventurous approach. “Hello Hello” brings the band's melodic instincts to the foreground, while “Asforteri 25” offers a brief instrumental interlude. The expansive “Can't Be Long Now – Françoise – For Richard – Warlock” is a particular highlight, developing through a sequence of contrasting sections that showcase the group's improvisational flair and jazz-rock sensibilities. “Limits” closes the album with a concise final statement.

Throughout the record, Caravan strike a distinctive balance between complexity and warmth. Their music can be intricate without losing its melodic centre, experimental without becoming inaccessible, and playful without sacrificing musical sophistication. These qualities helped establish the Canterbury scene as one of the most distinctive strands of British progressive rock, alongside the more grandiose and symphonic approaches associated with other bands of the period.

The album also represents an important stage in Caravan's evolution towards In the Land of Grey and Pink (1971), widely regarded as one of the classic albums of the Canterbury movement. For listeners exploring that tradition, this earlier release offers an equally rewarding combination of pastoral atmosphere, inventive arrangements and spirited ensemble playing.

Essential listening for fans of Caravan, Soft Machine, Canterbury progressive rock and the more melodic side of early-1970s prog, If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You remains a richly detailed and characterful album from a band at the height of its early creative development.
