Released in 1999, The Road to Hell Part 2 revisits themes from Chris Rea's highly successful 1989 album The Road to Hell. Rather than being a direct musical sequel, it serves as a reflection on the social, cultural, and personal changes that occurred during the decade separating the two releases.

By this stage of his career, Rea had moved further toward a blues-based sound, combining his trademark slide guitar playing with atmospheric production and thoughtful songwriting. The album blends blues rock, roots rock, and contemporary adult-oriented pop, creating a mood that is often reflective, understated, and cinematic.

Many of the songs explore themes of modern life, technology, alienation, travel, and personal freedom. Rea's distinctive husky vocals and expressive guitar work remain central throughout, giving the album a cohesive and mature character. Tracks such as "Last Open Road" became fan favourites and exemplify his fascination with driving, movement, and escape - recurring motifs throughout his catalogue.
