Antonín Dvořák / Bedřich Smetana – Cello Concerto In B Minor, Op. 104 / The Moldau

This CD brings together two masterpieces of Czech classical music by Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana: Dvořák's deeply expressive Cello Concerto in B Minor, Op. 104 and Smetana's evocative orchestral tone poem The Moldau (Vltava) from Má Vlast.

Composed between 1894 and 1895, Dvořák's Cello Concerto in B Minor is widely regarded as one of the greatest works ever written for cello and orchestra. The concerto combines the rich, sonorous character of the solo cello with Dvořák's sweeping orchestral writing, moving from the dramatic opening Allegro through the lyrical Adagio ma non troppo to the powerful and emotionally charged Finale: Allegro moderato.

Dvořák's writing gives the cello an extraordinary range of expression, from intimate, singing melodies to passages of considerable virtuosity. The concerto also reflects the composer's characteristic melodic gift and his ability to balance soloist and orchestra within a large-scale Romantic structure.

The programme continues with The Moldau (Vltava), the best-known section of Smetana's six-part orchestral cycle Má Vlast. Composed in the 1870s, the work follows the course of the Vltava River through the Czech landscape, from its two small springs through forests and countryside towards Prague. Its instantly recognisable main theme and vivid orchestration make it one of the most popular examples of programme music in the classical repertoire.

Together, these works offer a superb introduction to the richness of Czech Romantic music, combining Dvořák's monumental cello concerto with Smetana's evocative musical portrait of the Czech landscape. An excellent choice for listeners exploring Dvořák, Smetana, cello concertos, orchestral music and Romantic classical music.
