Dave Brubeck ‎– La Fiesta De La Posada

Dave Brubeck – La Fiesta De La Posada

A distinctive seasonal work from jazz great Dave Brubeck, La Fiesta De La Posada is a Christmas cantata inspired by las posadas — the Latin American tradition reenacting Mary and Joseph’s search for shelter before the birth of Jesus. Composed in 1975, it brings the Nativity story to life through a sequence of short musical scenes, combining orchestral passages, choral singing and vocal soloists with Brubeck’s own musical sensibility.

The recording features the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra under conductor Dennis Russell Davies, with the Dale Warland Singers among the vocal performers. Rather than a collection of familiar carols, the album unfolds as a connected musical pageant: from the opening “Prelude” and the journey of “La Posada” through the story’s dramatic and devotional moments, towards the celebratory finale, “La Piñata”. The result is an unusual entry in Brubeck’s catalogue, rooted in Christmas tradition while reaching beyond conventional seasonal repertoire.

An appealing choice for listeners interested in Dave Brubeck beyond his best-known jazz recordings, as well as collectors of orchestral, choral and less familiar Christmas albums.
