Dee Dee Wilde was already part of a musical family before launching her solo career, with her brother Eugene Wilde finding success as an R&B singer during the 1980s. After performing with family groups under a number of names, Dee Dee secured her own deal with 4th & Broadway and released “I Found You” as her first single in 1988. The track, along with “Lap Of Luxury,” helped establish her in the UK and paved the way for No Way Out.
The album is a strong example of the polished 1980s soul and contemporary R&B sound, moving between romantic slow jams, sophisticated funk and dance-oriented grooves. Wilde's vocal style has been compared with powerhouse soul singers such as Chaka Khan alongside the deeper, smoother tones of Evelyn “Champagne” King, giving No Way Out plenty of character across its ten tracks.
The title track “No Way Out” sits alongside the previously successful “I Found You” and “Lap Of Luxury,” while Wilde also turns her attention to Sade's “Smooth Operator” and the soul classic “I'll Be Good To You.” The combination of original material and carefully chosen covers gives the album a distinctly late-'80s R&B feel while highlighting Wilde's versatility as a singer.
