Deep Purple – Stormbringer
Deep Purple – Stormbringer
Released in 1974, Stormbringer captures Deep Purple at a fascinating turning point. Following the arrival of David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes on Burn, the band continued to reshape its sound, bringing funk, soul and blues influences further into their formidable hard-rock foundations. The result is a richly varied album that balances powerful guitar-driven tracks with more soulful grooves and melodic, atmospheric moments.
The title track makes an explosive opening statement, driven by Ritchie Blackmore’s unmistakable guitar work, Jon Lord’s keyboards and the commanding interplay between Coverdale and Hughes. Elsewhere, “Lady Double Dealer” delivers a punchy dose of classic Purple hard rock, while “High Ball Shooter” brings a funky edge to the band's muscular sound. “Love Don't Mean A Thing” and “You Can't Do It Right (With The One You Love)” explore the more rhythmically adventurous side of the record.
The album also makes room for more reflective performances. Glenn Hughes takes the lead vocal on the soulful “Holy Man”, while “The Gypsy” builds an atmospheric blues-rock mood. Closing track “Soldier Of Fortune” is one of the band's most enduring ballads, with Coverdale's expressive vocal and Blackmore's delicate guitar creating a beautifully understated finale.
Featuring David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord and Ian Paice, Stormbringer was recorded at Musicland Studios in Munich during August 1974 and mixed at the Record Plant in Los Angeles. Produced by Deep Purple and Martin Birch, it remains an essential chapter in the band's seventies catalogue: adventurous, groove-heavy and unmistakably Deep Purple, even as the group pushed beyond its established hard-rock sound.
