Fill Your Head With Prog

A fascinating snapshot of progressive rock's adventurous early years, Fill Your Head With Prog brings together eleven tracks spanning British progressive rock, Greek psychedelic rock, experimental electronic music and the more exploratory fringes of the European rock scene. Featuring The Nice, The Way We Live, Aphrodite's Child, Tractor, Wigwam, White Noise, String Driven Thing, Body, Steve Hillage, Caravan and Van der Graaf Generator, this compilation showcases the diversity of musical ideas that flourished as rock moved beyond conventional song structures in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The collection opens with The Nice and an alternative stereo version of “America,” the group's dramatic reworking of Leonard Bernstein's music from West Side Story. Driven by Keith Emerson's flamboyant keyboards and the band's classical influences, The Nice transformed familiar material into something bold, theatrical and distinctly progressive. The inclusion of the “Second Amendment” section makes this version particularly interesting for listeners exploring the group's early experimental approach.

The Way We Live's “Watching White Stars” introduces a more underground British progressive sound, while Aphrodite's Child's “The Four Horsemen” brings a darker, more apocalyptic atmosphere. Taken from the Greek group's acclaimed 1972 album 666, the track blends psychedelic rock, dramatic vocals and an ambitious conceptual framework inspired by the Book of Revelation.

Tractor's “Little Girl In Yellow” adds a more earthy, guitar-led character, contrasting with the expansive arrangements of Wigwam's “Fairyport.” The Finnish band's music combined progressive structures with jazz influences and a distinctly individual approach to composition, reflecting the international reach of the progressive movement beyond Britain.

White Noise's “Your Hidden Dreams” brings experimental electronics into the mix. Associated with David Vorhaus and the pioneering use of electronic instruments, White Noise explored a more unsettling and studio-based form of psychedelia, creating a striking contrast with the conventional rock instrumentation elsewhere on the compilation. String Driven Thing's “Night Club” offers another change of texture, drawing on the Scottish group's blend of progressive rock, folk influences and expressive violin-led arrangements.

Body's “The Sun Will Never Shine On” continues the compilation's exploration of lesser-known progressive music, while Steve Hillage's “Hurdy Gurdy Man” showcases the guitarist's distinctive connection to psychedelic rock and the wider Canterbury and Gong scenes. His fluid guitar playing and spacious arrangements make him an important link between the early progressive underground and the more exploratory sounds that followed during the 1970s.

Caravan's “Nightmare” brings the characteristic Canterbury scene into focus, combining intricate musicianship with melodic writing and the group's understated, sometimes whimsical approach to progressive rock. The compilation closes with Van der Graaf Generator's “Man-Erg,” an expansive and emotionally intense composition from their 1971 album Pawn Hearts. Peter Hammill's dramatic vocals, Hugh Banton's organ and the band's dynamic shifts create a powerful finale that captures the more challenging, theatrical side of British progressive music.

What makes Fill Your Head With Prog appealing is its breadth. Rather than concentrating on one band or a narrow definition of progressive rock, it moves between symphonic ambition, psychedelic experimentation, electronic sound design, folk-inflected arrangements and extended compositions. It provides a useful introduction to the variety of ideas circulating through the underground music scenes of the period, including artists whose work remains less familiar than that of the genre's biggest names.

For collectors of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, Canterbury scene recordings and early electronic experimentation, this compilation offers a rewarding selection of contrasting musical approaches. It is particularly suited to listeners who enjoy discovering the deeper catalogue of the late-1960s and early-1970s underground, where musical boundaries were continually being tested.
