Fripp & Eno – (No Pussyfooting)
Fripp & Eno – (No Pussyfooting)
A landmark in experimental music, (No Pussyfooting) brings together two of the most inventive musicians of the early 1970s: King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp and electronic music pioneer Brian Eno. Originally released in November 1973, this groundbreaking collaboration explores the possibilities of electric guitar, tape loops and electronic sound, creating two expansive instrumental pieces that helped lay the foundations for ambient music.
The album grew out of Eno's experiments with tape delay, using a pair of modified Revox reel-to-reel machines to record, repeat and layer musical phrases. Fripp's guitar playing is fed through this system, allowing individual notes and phrases to build into slowly shifting patterns of sound. Eno adds further electronic treatments, creating an immersive musical environment in which melody, texture and atmosphere become inseparable.
The technique became closely associated with Fripp and was later known as Frippertronics. Rather than following conventional rock structures, the music develops organically through repetition, gradual changes in tone and overlapping layers of guitar. The result is hypnotic, exploratory and remarkably influential, anticipating approaches that would become central to ambient, drone and experimental electronic music.
The opening side, 'The Heavenly Music Corporation', was recorded in Eno's home studio in September 1972. Stretching across the entire side, its slowly accumulating guitar textures move between shimmering harmonics, sustained notes and dense, atmospheric passages. It is a fascinating demonstration of how a relatively simple recording process can produce music of extraordinary depth and scale.
'Swastika Girls', recorded the following year at Command Studios in London, takes the experimentation in a different direction. Its darker, more unsettled electronic textures and manipulated guitar sounds create a more abstract and challenging listening experience, while retaining the album's distinctive sense of gradual development.
Although the musicians came from very different musical backgrounds, the meeting of Fripp's precise, expressive guitar work and Eno's interest in sound manipulation proved exceptionally fruitful. Both artists produced the album, with Ray Hendriksen engineering the recordings. The original Island Records release also featured striking sleeve design and photography by Willie Christie.
(No Pussyfooting)* is an essential early document in the development of ambient and experimental music. Its influence can be heard across generations of electronic musicians, sound artists and guitar experimenters, while its two long-form compositions remain absorbing listening experiences in their own right.
Highly recommended for fans of Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, King Crimson, ambient music, experimental rock, drone, minimalism and pioneering electronic sound. A genuinely important and adventurous 1970s recording.
