Jack Bruce – Songs For A Tailor
Jack Bruce – Songs For A Tailor
Released in 1969, Songs For A Tailor is the remarkable first solo album released by Jack Bruce, the Scottish bassist, vocalist and composer best known at the time for his work with Cream. Rather than simply extending Cream’s blues-rock formula, Bruce used this record to explore a more adventurous musical landscape, bringing together progressive rock, jazz, blues, intricate arrangements and a distinctly British sense of lyrical eccentricity.
Produced by Felix Pappalardi, the album features lyrics by Pete Brown, Bruce’s celebrated Cream collaborator. Brown’s vivid, often surreal writing provides an unusual counterpoint to Bruce’s sophisticated compositions, while the music moves effortlessly between muscular rock, jazz-inflected passages, melodic balladry and richly textured instrumental sections. Bruce’s fluid bass playing, expressive vocals and contributions on piano, organ and other instruments give the record a strong musical identity of its own.
The standout “Theme For An Imaginary Western” has become one of Bruce’s signature compositions: a sweeping, evocative song that was later famously recorded by Mountain. Elsewhere, “Never Tell Your Mother She's Out Of Tune” introduces the album with a lively, horn-coloured arrangement, while “Rope Ladder To The Moon” and “The Ministry Of Bag” demonstrate Bruce’s willingness to move beyond conventional blues-rock structures. “Weird Of Hermiston” and “To Isengard” add further shades of mystery and experimentation.
The musicianship is a major part of the album’s appeal. Alongside Bruce, the sessions feature guitarist Chris Spedding, drummer Jon Hiseman and an impressive cast of jazz musicians, including saxophonists Dick Heckstall-Smith and Art Themen and trumpeters Harry Beckett and Henry Lowther. George Harrison also contributed guitar to “Never Tell Your Mother She's Out Of Tune”, credited under the pseudonym L’Angelo Misterioso.
The album’s title honours Jeannie Franklyn, the clothing designer known as Genie the Tailor who worked with Cream and died in 1969. This personal dedication adds a poignant dimension to a record whose musical imagination reaches well beyond the conventions of a typical post-Cream solo project.
An essential listen for fans of Jack Bruce, Cream, British progressive rock and jazz-rock, Songs For A Tailor captures a gifted musician striking out on his own, surrounded by adventurous collaborators and unafraid to follow unconventional ideas. A rewarding addition to any collection of late-1960s British rock and forward-thinking songwriting.
