James Taylor – James Taylor's Greatest Hits

James Taylor's Greatest Hits is the classic 1976 compilation that brings together some of the most enduring recordings from the early part of James Taylor's career. Originally released by Warner Bros. Records in November 1976, the album gathers twelve songs spanning Taylor's breakthrough years, combining intimate singer-songwriter material with folk, country, soft rock and soulful pop influences.

The album opens with “Something In The Way She Moves” and “Carolina In My Mind,” both specially re-recorded in 1976 for this collection. The original versions had appeared on Taylor's 1968 self-titled debut for Apple Records, but contractual difficulties surrounding the original recordings led to the new versions being made for Greatest Hits.

The remainder of Side A brings together some of Taylor's most familiar songs, including the introspective “Fire And Rain,” the warmly personal “Sweet Baby James,” “Country Road” and “You've Got A Friend.” Together they showcase the understated acoustic guitar, conversational vocals and emotionally direct songwriting that became central to Taylor's distinctive singer-songwriter style.

Side B continues with “Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight,” “Walking Man,” “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You),” “Mexico” and “Shower The People.” The inclusion of “How Sweet It Is” demonstrates Taylor's ability to bring his relaxed folk-pop approach to soul material, while “Mexico” and “Walking Man” reflect the increasingly polished sound of his mid-1970s Warner Bros. recordings.

The album closes with a particularly distinctive version of “Steamroller,” recorded live and previously unavailable in this form. That combination of newly recorded material, established album favourites and a live performance gave Greatest Hits a slightly different character from a conventional hits compilation.

Recorded material represented on the collection spans 1969–1976, although the two Apple-era songs were newly recorded in 1976 and the album itself was compiled and released that year. The result is an essential snapshot of Taylor's early Warner Bros. period and one of the defining singer-songwriter albums of the 1970s.
