Joan Armatrading – The Very Best Of Joan Armatrading

Joan Armatrading – The Very Best Of Joan Armatrading is a career-spanning introduction to one of the most distinctive singer-songwriters in British music. Originally released in 1991 on A&M Records, this compilation brings together 14 songs showcasing the emotional depth, melodic sophistication and stylistic versatility that have defined Armatrading's music.

Born in St Kitts and raised in Birmingham, Armatrading built an international reputation through her expressive songwriting, distinctive vocals and accomplished guitar playing. Her music moves effortlessly between folk, rock, blues, soul and sophisticated pop, combining intimate storytelling with memorable melodies and arrangements that reward repeated listening.

This collection captures several defining aspects of her musical identity. The much-loved Love And Affection (Remix) highlights her gift for emotionally direct songwriting, while Down To Zero demonstrates the intimacy and lyrical intensity of her earlier work. Drop The Pilot brings a more buoyant, pop-oriented energy, and Me, Myself, I showcases the confident melodic songwriting that helped establish her as a major recording artist.

Elsewhere, The Weakness In Me reveals her ability to convey vulnerability and emotional complexity, while Willow, Show Some Emotion and All The Way From America further illustrate the breadth of her songwriting. The inclusion of material spanning different periods of her career makes this compilation a useful overview of an artist whose music has never been confined to a single genre.

First achieving international recognition in the 1970s, Armatrading became known for combining the independence of the singer-songwriter tradition with a sound that could embrace acoustic intimacy, blues-inflected guitar work, soulful vocals and polished pop arrangements. Her influence and longevity reflect a commitment to musical individuality rather than following passing trends.

For listeners discovering Joan Armatrading for the first time, The Very Best Of Joan Armatrading offers an accessible selection of signature songs. Long-standing fans will appreciate the opportunity to revisit familiar favourites in one collection, while collectors of British singer-songwriter music, classic rock, folk-rock and sophisticated pop will find a concise snapshot of an important and enduring musical career.
