Joan Armatrading – Track Record

Released in 1983, Track Record is the first greatest hits compilation by British singer-songwriter Joan Armatrading, bringing together some of the finest recordings from her influential early career. Spanning a period of remarkable musical development, the collection showcases her distinctive blend of contemporary folk, rock, pop and soulful songwriting, highlighting the expressive vocals, intelligent lyrics and accomplished musicianship that established her as one of Britain's most respected singer-songwriters.

By the early 1980s, Armatrading had developed an impressive catalogue of critically acclaimed albums, moving confidently between intimate acoustic compositions, sophisticated pop arrangements and more energetic rock-influenced material. Track Record draws on five studio albums, from her self-titled 1976 release through to 1983's The Key, alongside material from her earlier How Cruel EP and two previously unreleased recordings.

The compilation opens with Drop The Pilot, one of Armatrading's biggest commercial successes, driven by its infectious rhythm, memorable guitar work and distinctive vocal performance. (I Love It When You) Call Me Names provides another lively highlight, demonstrating her ability to combine sharp lyrical observations with accessible pop-rock arrangements. Me Myself I is equally memorable, its upbeat energy and catchy chorus making it one of the defining recordings of her career.

The collection also explores the more intimate and emotionally expressive side of her songwriting. Love And Affection, originally released in 1976, remains one of her signature compositions, a beautifully crafted song distinguished by its warmth, sincerity and soulful delivery. The Weakness In Me is another standout, a deeply personal exploration of emotional vulnerability and romantic uncertainty, while Down To Zero showcases the more acoustic, folk-influenced side of her early work.

Two previously unreleased recordings add further interest to the compilation. Frustration and Heaven sit alongside established favourites, making the collection particularly rewarding for listeners interested in the development of Armatrading's songwriting during this period.

The album brings together material associated with several notable producers, including Glyn Johns, Richard Gottehrer, Steve Lillywhite and Val Garay, reflecting the variety of musical approaches that shaped her recordings. Despite the different production styles and recording periods, the collection maintains a strong sense of identity through Armatrading's distinctive voice, guitar playing and songwriting.

Track Record reached number 18 on the UK Albums Chart and remains a particularly useful introduction to Joan Armatrading's remarkable body of work. For longtime fans, it offers a convenient collection of important recordings from her formative years; for newcomers, it provides an excellent overview of the songs that helped establish her reputation in British contemporary folk, singer-songwriter music and melodic rock.

An essential Joan Armatrading compilation featuring enduring favourites including Love And Affection, Drop The Pilot, Me Myself I and The Weakness In Me. Highly recommended for fans of intelligent songwriting, classic British singer-songwriter music and beautifully crafted 1970s and 1980s folk-rock.
