Kenny Ball And His Jazzmen – Kenny Ball And His Jazzmen

Kenny Ball And His Jazzmen were among the best-known names in the British traditional jazz revival of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Led by trumpeter Kenny Ball, the group helped bring New Orleans-inspired jazz to a broad British audience, combining lively ensemble playing, infectious rhythms and a repertoire drawn from early jazz, blues, ragtime and popular song.

This self-titled collection showcases the traditional jazz repertoire through twelve tracks, bringing together celebrated New Orleans standards, blues numbers and familiar popular melodies. “Savoy Blues” and “Ostrich Walk” draw on the early jazz tradition, while “High Society” is a perennial ensemble showcase, known for its lively clarinet-led passages and opportunities for spirited improvisation.

The blues influence comes through on “Tin Roof Blues” and “Potato Head Blues”, the latter associated with Louis Armstrong’s influential Hot Seven recordings. “Dark Eyes” brings a different melodic flavour to the programme, while “Big Noise From Winnetka” adds a popular swing-era number to the mix. The inclusion of “You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby” and “Putting On The Ritz” reflects the band’s approach to familiar songs, reworking them through the exuberant sound of traditional jazz.

Tracks such as “Fingerbuster”, “Blue Turning Grey” and “Samantha” further broaden the programme, offering a varied selection for listeners who enjoy the interplay of trumpet, clarinet, trombone and rhythm section that characterises the British trad-jazz sound.

Kenny Ball became a central figure in the UK jazz revival, and his band achieved international recognition with performances that brought traditional jazz to concert halls, clubs and mainstream audiences. Their music is closely associated with the trad-jazz boom of the early 1960s, when New Orleans-style jazz enjoyed considerable popularity in Britain.

For fans of traditional jazz, Dixieland, New Orleans revival music and vintage British jazz, this album offers a varied programme of standards and period favourites. It is also an appealing choice for collectors exploring the British jazz revival and the enduring popularity of classic small-band jazz.
