Nirvana – Bleach

Released in 1989, Bleach is the raw and uncompromising debut album from Nirvana, capturing the band at the beginning of their journey through the underground Seattle rock scene. Recorded on a modest budget, the album is markedly heavier and more abrasive than the polished sound that would later make Nevermind a global phenomenon, drawing heavily on punk, sludge, heavy rock, and underground alternative music.

Recorded with producer Jack Endino at Seattle's Reciprocal Recording studio, Bleach established many of the characteristics that would become central to Nirvana's sound: distorted guitars, pounding drums, dynamic shifts, and Kurt Cobain's distinctive combination of melodic songwriting and raw aggression. Bassist Krist Novoselic provides a powerful rhythmic foundation, while Chad Channing performs drums on most of the original album.

The record opens with the explosive "Blew," immediately establishing its heavy, grinding sound. "Floyd The Barber" and "School" continue the abrasive attack, while "About A Girl" provides an early glimpse of Cobain's talent for writing deceptively simple, melodic songs. "Love Buzz," originally written and recorded by Dutch psychedelic rock band Shocking Blue, became one of the album's defining tracks and demonstrated Nirvana's ability to reinterpret their influences through their own distorted aesthetic.

Side two features some of the album's heaviest material, including "Negative Creep," "Scoff," and "Mr. Moustache." The record closes with the brooding "Sifting," completing an album that feels raw, claustrophobic, and unmistakably rooted in the late-1980s American underground.

While Nevermind would later introduce Nirvana to a worldwide audience, Bleach remains essential for understanding where the band's sound came from. Perfect for fans of Mudhoney, Melvins, Soundgarden, Black Flag, The Jesus Lizard, and early grunge, this is an essential record for any Nirvana or alternative rock vinyl collection.
