Primal Scream – Screamadelica

Released in 1991, Screamadelica is the landmark third studio album from Scottish band Primal Scream and one of the most important records to emerge from the UK's alternative and dance music explosion of the early 1990s. Blending rock, acid house, dub, psychedelia, gospel, and electronic dance music, the album radically transformed Primal Scream's sound and became a defining record of the rave era.

The album was shaped by the band's collaboration with influential producers and remixers including Andrew Weatherall, The Orb's Alex Paterson, Hugo Nicholson, and Jimmy Miller. Rather than simply adding dance elements to a rock record, Screamadelica fused the two cultures together, allowing electronic production, samples, loops, and extended grooves to sit alongside Bobby Gillespie's vocals and the band's psychedelic rock influences.

The opening "Movin' On Up" provides a soulful, gospel-tinged introduction before the album dives into the psychedelic rock of "Slip Inside This House" and the driving dancefloor energy of "Don't Fight It, Feel It." "Higher Than The Sun" takes the record into atmospheric psychedelic territory, while "Inner Flight" creates a more spacious, immersive interlude.

The centrepiece is the iconic "Come Together," a sprawling fusion of rock, gospel, funk, and electronic production. Side three opens with "Loaded," one of the defining tracks of the early-1990s UK club scene and a landmark remix by Andrew Weatherall. "Damaged" and "I'm Comin' Down" then bring the album back towards its more soulful and psychedelic side.

The final side is dominated by "Higher Than The Sun (A Dub Symphony In Two Parts)," an expansive electronic journey that perfectly captures the album's experimental spirit, before the beautiful "Shine Like Stars" brings the record to a reflective close.

Widely regarded as a classic of British alternative music, Screamadelica helped break down the barriers between indie rock and dance music, influencing generations of musicians, DJs, and producers.
