Radio Tarifa – Temporal

Released in 1996, Temporal is the second album from Spanish ensemble Radio Tarifa, a group whose distinctive musical vision brings together flamenco, Iberian folk, Sephardic melodies and North African influences. Building on the foundations of their acclaimed debut, Rumba Argelina, the album explores the historical connections between musical traditions on both sides of the Mediterranean, creating an adventurous sound that is at once earthy, atmospheric and rhythmically compelling.

Radio Tarifa took its name from Tarifa, the Andalusian town at the southernmost tip of mainland Spain, facing the coast of Morocco across the Strait of Gibraltar. The group's music reflects this geographical and cultural crossroads, drawing inspiration from centuries of exchange between Spanish, Moorish and Jewish musical traditions. Rather than simply combining contemporary world music styles, the ensemble looks towards older musical forms and the shared histories that connect them.

The group's core members, Faín S. Dueñas, Vincent Molino and vocalist Benjamín Escoriza, developed a distinctive sound using an unusual combination of traditional and modern instruments. Percussion, oud, ney flute, crumhorn, oboe, bouzouki, bass and saxophone create a rich musical landscape in which ancient-sounding melodies sit alongside contemporary rhythmic arrangements. Escoriza's expressive vocals provide a compelling centre to the instrumental interplay, while Dueñas and Molino shape the arrangements with an adventurous approach to texture and rhythm.

Compared with the group's debut, Temporal places a stronger emphasis on flamenco and the roots of traditional Iberian music. The album moves between lively dance rhythms, haunting vocal passages and intricate instrumental pieces, drawing on Spanish folk, North African influences and older European musical traditions. The result is a record that feels deeply connected to the past without sounding like a museum reconstruction.

“La Tarara” opens the album with a distinctive interpretation of a traditional Spanish song, while “Las Cuevas” develops the group's characteristic blend of rhythmic percussion and melodic interplay. “Canción Sefardí” explores the musical heritage associated with Sephardic culture, reflecting the album's interest in the historical links between the peoples and traditions of the Mediterranean.

Elsewhere, “Baile de Almut” brings an original composition into the programme, while “Soleá” draws on one of flamenco's most expressive forms. “Tangos de la Condición” adds a more rhythmically driven dimension, demonstrating the group's ability to move between different musical traditions while maintaining a coherent ensemble sound.

The title track, “Temporal,” captures the album's atmospheric side, combining vocals and layered instrumentation in a performance that reflects Radio Tarifa's fascination with musical journeys across time and geography. “El Mandil de Carolina” draws on traditional Spanish repertoire, while “Vestido de Flores” closes the album with another meeting of folk melody and the group's distinctive instrumental palette.

What makes Temporal particularly rewarding is the balance between scholarship and spontaneity. The musicians draw on historical instruments and traditional repertoire, yet their performances remain lively and contemporary. The intricate percussion, unusual wind instruments and expressive vocals create a sound that sits comfortably between flamenco, world music, experimental folk and Mediterranean roots music.

For collectors and listeners interested in Spanish folk, flamenco, Sephardic music and adventurous world music, Temporal is an essential part of Radio Tarifa's early catalogue. It captures a pioneering ensemble developing a distinctive musical language, connecting cultures and centuries through rhythm, melody and an imaginative approach to traditional music.
