Santana – Amigos (US Reissue)
Santana – Amigos
Released in 1976, Amigos is the seventh studio album from Santana and an important chapter in the group's evolution from their pioneering Latin rock beginnings towards a more accessible fusion of rock, funk, soul and Latin jazz. Featuring Carlos Santana's unmistakable guitar playing alongside an accomplished ensemble of musicians, the album marked a return to greater commercial success following the group's more experimental mid-1970s releases.
Produced by David Rubinson and recorded at Wally Heider Studios in San Francisco, Amigos combines Santana's distinctive Latin percussion and fluid guitar work with richer keyboard arrangements, infectious rhythms and a stronger emphasis on melodic songwriting. The result is a vibrant, beautifully arranged album that balances instrumental sophistication with soulful vocal performances.
The album opens with the exuberant Dance Sister Dance (Baila Mi Hermana), an eight-minute Latin rock workout driven by infectious percussion, expressive guitar and an irresistible rhythmic groove. Take Me With You and Let Me continue the album's mixture of instrumental interplay and soulful melodic passages, with keyboardist Tom Coster playing a particularly important role in shaping its distinctive sound.
Armando Peraza takes the vocal spotlight on Gitano, bringing an additional Latin flavour to the record, while Tell Me Are You Tired showcases the group's more soulful and accessible side. One of Santana's most celebrated compositions, Europa (Earth's Cry Heaven's Smile), provides the album's emotional centrepiece. Built around one of Carlos Santana's most memorable guitar melodies, this beautiful instrumental ballad gradually unfolds through expressive phrasing, delicate keyboard accompaniment and a wonderfully atmospheric arrangement. It remains one of the defining recordings of Santana's career.
Closing with Let It Shine, an energetic, funk-influenced number, the album finishes on an uplifting note, demonstrating the group's ability to move between Latin rhythms, rock guitar and contemporary soul without losing their musical identity.
Amigos also marked a significant commercial comeback for Santana, returning the band to the American album chart's Top Ten for the first time since Caravanserai in 1972. Its combination of melodic accessibility, accomplished musicianship and unmistakable Latin rock character helped reconnect the group with a wider audience.
An essential 1970s Santana album, Amigos is particularly rewarding for fans of Latin rock, jazz fusion, instrumental guitar music and sophisticated funk-inflected rock. Featuring the timeless Europa (Earth's Cry Heaven's Smile) alongside some superb ensemble performances, this CD is a welcome addition to any Santana collection.
