“Richard Strauss” – Till Eulenspiegel / Also Sprach Zarathustra / Don Juan brings together three of the German composer’s most celebrated orchestral tone poems, showcasing the colourful orchestration, dramatic storytelling and immense sonic scale that established Strauss as one of the leading composers of the late Romantic era. The works span 1888–1896, covering an important period in the development of his orchestral style.

Don Juan, Op. 20, was composed in 1888–1889 and was inspired by Nikolaus Lenau’s dramatic poem. It was the work that helped propel the young Strauss to international prominence, with its energetic opening, sweeping melodies and virtuosic orchestral writing making an immediate impact.

Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche (Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks), Op. 28, followed in 1894–1895. Based on the legendary German prankster Till Eulenspiegel, Strauss uses the orchestra to create a vivid musical portrait full of humour, mischief and dramatic contrasts. The work premiered in Cologne on 5 November 1895.

Completing the programme is Also Sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30, composed in 1896 and inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophical work. Its monumental opening fanfare became one of the most recognisable passages in classical music, later gaining an entirely new audience through its prominent use in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Strauss's tone poem was premiered in Frankfurt on 27 November 1896.

Together, these three works offer an excellent introduction to Richard Strauss's tone poems, moving from the youthful brilliance of Don Juan through the playful characterisation of Till Eulenspiegel to the philosophical and monumental scale of Also Sprach Zarathustra.
