Simple Minds – Once Upon A Time (1985 UK Press)
Simple Minds – Once Upon A Time
Released in October 1985, Once Upon A Time is the seventh studio album from Scottish rock band Simple Minds and one of the defining records of their commercial breakthrough. Building on the atmospheric, synth-driven sound of earlier albums such as New Gold Dream (81–82–83–84) and Sparkle in the Rain, the band embraced a bigger, more expansive approach, combining dramatic new wave, melodic rock and dance-rock into a collection of powerful, stadium-sized anthems.
Produced by Jimmy Iovine and Bob Clearmountain, the album captures Simple Minds at a particularly ambitious point in their development. The production brings together Charlie Burchill's distinctive guitar work, Michael MacNeil's keyboards, Mel Gaynor's driving percussion and Jim Kerr's unmistakable, impassioned vocals. The result is a rich, energetic sound characterised by soaring melodies, atmospheric textures, infectious rhythms and an enormous sense of momentum.
The album arrived at a pivotal moment for the band. Having already established a strong following in Britain and Europe, Simple Minds were gaining significant international attention following the success of 'Don't You (Forget About Me)' from the film The Breakfast Club. Although that song was famously left off the original album, Once Upon A Time became their most successful release to date, reaching number one on the UK Albums Chart and breaking into the US Top 10.
Four singles emerged from the record: 'Alive And Kicking', 'Sanctify Yourself', 'All The Things She Said' and 'Ghost Dancing'. Each demonstrates a different aspect of the band's appeal, from the uplifting, widescreen rock of 'Alive And Kicking' to the driving rhythms and infectious hooks of 'Sanctify Yourself'. 'All The Things She Said' is another standout, balancing atmospheric keyboards with an insistent rhythm and one of Kerr's most memorable vocal performances.
Beyond its hit singles, the album is a consistently engaging showcase of mid-1980s British alternative rock evolving into something more expansive and accessible. Tracks such as 'Oh Jungleland' and 'I Wish You Were Here' add further depth, while the title track establishes the album's dramatic, celebratory atmosphere from the outset.
A landmark release in the Simple Minds catalogue, Once Upon A Time remains an essential listen for fans of 1980s new wave, alternative rock, synth-driven pop and classic arena rock. A particularly appealing record for collectors of original-era British rock and anyone looking to revisit one of the decade's most recognisable albums.
