Spandau Ballet – Journeys To Glory
Spandau Ballet – Journeys To Glory
Released in 1981, Journeys To Glory is the landmark debut album from Spandau Ballet, capturing the band at the heart of London's emerging New Romantic movement. Originally issued on Reformation/Chrysalis, the album reached No. 5 in the UK Albums Chart and spent 29 weeks in the chart, establishing Spandau Ballet as one of the defining British bands of the early 1980s.
The album developed the stylish, electronic and dance-oriented sound that had already made Spandau Ballet one of the most talked-about groups on London's club scene. Produced by Richard James Burgess, Journeys To Glory combines synthesizers, angular guitars, melodic bass and tight electronic-influenced rhythms with Tony Hadley's powerful vocals. The result sits at the intersection of new wave, synth-pop, post-punk, art pop and early New Romanticism, reflecting the experimental atmosphere surrounding clubs such as the Blitz.
The opening “To Cut A Long Story Short” had already announced the band's arrival before the album appeared. Released in October 1980, the single became a UK No. 5 hit, and its combination of synthesizers, driving rhythm and theatrical vocals remains one of the defining recordings of the early New Romantic era.
The album continues with “Reformation,” “Mandolin” and “Muscle Bound,” before moving into the darker and more atmospheric “Age Of Blows,” “The Freeze” and “Confused.” The closing “Toys” provides an expansive finale, giving the record a more experimental character than the polished pop sound Spandau Ballet would develop on their later albums. The original eight-track sequence is confirmed for the 1981 Chrysalis LP, catalogue CHR 1331.
Journeys To Glory is particularly important for collectors interested in the early New Romantic movement, as it captures Spandau Ballet before their later transformation into international pop and soul-influenced stars. Alongside contemporaries such as Duran Duran, Visage, Ultravox and Japan, Spandau Ballet helped establish the sophisticated, fashion-conscious electronic pop sound that emerged from London's post-punk and club culture.
For fans of 1980s new wave, synth-pop, New Romantic, post-punk and British electronic pop, Journeys To Glory remains an essential debut. It documents Spandau Ballet at their most youthful, experimental and club-oriented, before the major mainstream success of True and the polished soul-pop direction that would follow.
