Supertramp – Breakfast In America
Supertramp – Breakfast In America
A landmark of late-1970s progressive pop and classic rock, Breakfast In America is Supertramp at their most accessible, ambitious, and commercially successful. Originally released in 1979, the band's sixth studio album seamlessly blends progressive rock musicianship with sophisticated pop songwriting, memorable melodies, piano-led arrangements, saxophone, and polished studio production.
Recorded at The Village Recorder in Los Angeles and produced by Supertramp alongside Peter Henderson, Breakfast In America marked the point where the band's intricate progressive rock sound evolved into a more concise and radio-friendly style without sacrificing the musicianship that had defined their earlier work. The result was a huge international success, reaching No. 1 in the US and Canada and becoming Supertramp's best-selling album.
The album opens with the atmospheric Gone Hollywood before moving into one of Supertramp's most recognisable songs, The Logical Song. With its instantly recognisable Wurlitzer piano, distinctive saxophone, changing rhythms and thought-provoking lyrics, the track became one of the band's signature recordings. Goodbye Stranger provides another standout moment, combining piano, keyboards, guitar and layered vocals with an unforgettable chorus.
The title track Breakfast In America brings a lighter, playful feel, while Oh Darling continues the album's melodic approach. Side B features the superb Take The Long Way Home, another major Supertramp hit, alongside the reflective Lord Is It Mine, the energetic Just Another Nervous Wreck, and the atmospheric Casual Conversations. The album closes with the expansive Child Of Vision, bringing together keyboards, saxophone and Supertramp's progressive instincts in a fitting finale.
Breakfast In America was also a major critical and industry success, winning two Grammy Awards in 1980 for Best Album Package and Best Engineered Non-Classical Recording. It remains one of the defining albums of the late 1970s and is an essential record for fans of Supertramp, progressive rock, classic rock, art rock, soft rock and sophisticated 1970s pop.
A must-have Supertramp vinyl LP, Breakfast In America is an essential addition to any classic rock or progressive rock record collection, featuring some of the band's most enduring and recognisable songs.
