Electric Warrior is the landmark 1971 album from T. Rex and Marc Bolan, widely regarded as one of the defining records of the British glam-rock era. Following the transformation of Tyrannosaurus Rex into the electric T. Rex, the album marked the point at which Bolan's blend of rock 'n' roll, pop melody, blues and psychedelic influences became a hugely successful commercial sound.
The album opens with the atmospheric “Mambo Sun” and moves through a remarkable run of T. Rex classics including “Cosmic Dancer”, “Jeepster” and “Monolith”. “Cosmic Dancer” has become one of Bolan's most celebrated compositions, while “Jeepster” was released as a major UK hit despite not being the album's intended lead single.
The centrepiece is undoubtedly “Get It On”, T. Rex's iconic glam-rock anthem. Released as a single in 1971, it reached No. 1 in the UK and became one of the band's signature recordings. The track's infectious guitar riff, handclaps, saxophone and Bolan's distinctive vocal delivery perfectly capture the flamboyant, sensual sound that helped establish glam rock in the early 1970s.
The remainder of the album is equally strong, from the rolling groove of “Planet Queen” and “The Motivator” to the intimate “Girl” and the beautifully understated “Life's A Gas”. Recorded during 1971, with production by Tony Visconti, Electric Warrior features contributions from musicians including Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan of The Turtles, who provide backing vocals on several tracks.
