Terry Dene With The Malcolm Lockyer Group – Start Movin' / Green Corn

Originally released in 1957 on Decca Records, “Start Movin' (In My Direction)” / “Green Corn (Come Along Charlie)” is an excellent example of the early British rock 'n' roll sound emerging during the first wave of the UK teenage pop era. Issued as Decca F 10914, the single pairs vocalist Terry Dene with The Malcolm Lockyer Group, combining Dene's youthful rock 'n' roll delivery with a polished backing-group arrangement.

“Start Movin' (In My Direction)” was written by Hill and Stevenson and became one of Dene's biggest British hits, reaching No. 15 in the UK Singles Chart in 1957. It sits comfortably alongside the energetic pop and rock 'n' roll records being produced for the rapidly expanding British teenage market, while retaining the clean, accessible sound of a major Decca production.

The B-side, “Green Corn (Come Along Charlie),” provides a contrasting slice of 1950s novelty-leaning pop. Credited to traditional material with an arrangement by Bush, it again features the Malcolm Lockyer Group and demonstrates the broader range of material being recorded by British artists during the period.

Terry Dene was one of the prominent British singers of the pre-Beatles rock 'n' roll era, scoring a series of Decca releases during 1957–59. His breakthrough single “A White Sport Coat (And A Pink Carnation)” reached No. 18 earlier in 1957, while subsequent releases included “Stairway Of Love,” which reached No. 16 in 1958.

For collectors of 1950s British rock 'n' roll, Decca singles, early British pop and pre-Beatles music, Start Movin' / Green Corn is an appealing example of the period when British singers were adapting the American rock 'n' roll phenomenon into a distinctly UK pop sound. The involvement of The Malcolm Lockyer Group also makes this an interesting record for collectors of British session and dance-band musicians from the era.
