The Choir Of King's College, Cambridge, Directed By David Willcocks – The World Of Christmas

Discover the enduring beauty of traditional Christmas choral music with The World Of Christmas, performed by The Choir of King's College, Cambridge, under the direction of David Willcocks. Bringing together much-loved English carols, sacred Christmas hymns and centuries-old seasonal melodies, this collection captures the distinctive sound of one of Britain's most celebrated choirs.

Based at King's College Chapel in Cambridge, the choir is internationally renowned for its clear treble voices, rich harmonies and longstanding place in the English choral tradition. David Willcocks served as Director of Music at King's from 1957 to 1973, building an influential reputation as a conductor, organist and arranger. His Christmas arrangements, particularly those combining traditional melodies with expressive harmonies and a sense of musical grandeur, have become familiar to generations of listeners.

The World Of Christmas presents a varied programme that moves between jubilant congregational favourites, traditional English carols and more reflective sacred pieces. The collection opens with Mendelssohn's stirring melody for "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing", followed by "The First Nowell" and "While Shepherds Watched", firmly establishing the album's connection to the familiar sound of a traditional British Christmas.

Lighter, more animated moments arrive with "I Saw Three Ships" and "Ding, Dong! Merrily On High", whose lively character contrasts with the gentler devotional atmosphere of "King Jesus Hath A Garden". The programme also includes "In Dulci Jubilo", a carol with medieval roots, and "Unto Us Is Born A Son", a traditional Christmas text particularly associated with the English choral repertoire and Willcocks's arrangements.

The second side continues with the much-loved hymn "O Come All Ye Faithful", alongside "Away In A Manger" and "O Little Town Of Bethlehem". "The Holly And The Ivy" brings the distinctive imagery of the British winter season, while "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" adds a darker, more dramatic traditional melody. The closing selections, "See Amid The Winter's Snow" and "Past Three O'clock", complete the programme with further examples of the rich variety found in traditional Christmas music.

What makes this collection especially appealing is its balance of familiarity and musical heritage. Rather than relying solely on popular festive songs, it draws on a broad repertoire of carols shaped by English church music, European sacred traditions and generations of choral arrangement. The choir's disciplined ensemble sound and Willcocks's musical direction make it a rewarding choice for listeners who appreciate the ceremonial beauty of traditional Christmas performances.

Ideal for admirers of classical choral music, traditional carols and the English cathedral-choir tradition, The World Of Christmas is a natural addition to a seasonal record collection. Its timeless repertoire makes it equally suited to festive gatherings, quiet winter listening and anyone seeking the distinctive sound of Christmas as performed by the celebrated choir of King's College, Cambridge.
