Released in April 1985, Virgins And Philistines was the debut album from “The Colourfield”, the British band formed by former Specials and Fun Boy Three vocalist Terry Hall, alongside Toby Lyons and Karl Shale. Released on Chrysalis Records, the album reached No. 12 in the UK Albums Chart, establishing a more melodic, understated side to Hall's songwriting after the ska and post-punk of his previous groups.
Recorded during 1984–1985 at Strawberry Studios in Stockport, with overdubs and mixing at The Gardens Studio in London, the album was produced by Hugh Jones and Jeremy Green. The Colourfield's sound deliberately moved away from the sharper rhythms of The Specials and Fun Boy Three, drawing instead on acoustic guitars, elegant pop arrangements and influences from 1960s and early-1970s pop. The result is a sophisticated and often wistful record that sits comfortably alongside the more melodic end of British new wave and indie pop.
The album produced three UK singles: “Take”, “Thinking Of You” and “Castles In The Air”. “Thinking Of You” was the biggest success, reaching No. 12 in the UK Singles Chart, while the album's understated approach is also evident on “Faint Hearts”, “Cruel Circus” and the title track. The collection includes one notable cover, “Hammond Song”, originally written and recorded by The Roches, which The Colourfield recast in their own distinctive style.
With its combination of Terry Hall's distinctive vocals, acoustic textures, melodic songwriting and gently melancholic atmosphere, Virgins And Philistines is an essential album for fans of The Colourfield, The Specials, Fun Boy Three, British new wave and sophisticated 1980s indie pop.
