The Fixx – Saved By Zero

Originally released in 1983, “Saved By Zero” was one of the defining singles from “The Fixx” and the lead single from their second studio album, Reach The Beach. Released by MCA in the UK in April 1983, the track combines Cy Curnin’s distinctive vocals with atmospheric synthesizers, ringing guitar and a tightly controlled rhythm section, capturing the polished but slightly restless sound that helped define early-80s British new wave.

Produced by Rupert Hine, Reach The Beach was recorded during 1982–83 at Farmyard Studios in Buckinghamshire. “Saved By Zero” sits at the heart of the album's sophisticated synth-driven sound, alongside later Fixx favourites such as “One Thing Leads To Another” and “The Sign Of Fire”. The album became the band's most commercially successful release, reaching the US Top 10.

This release is particularly appealing for collectors of 1980s new wave, synth-pop and post-punk, with the extended 4:23 version of “Saved By Zero” giving the track more room to develop than the shorter single edit. The non-album “Going Overboard” provides the original B-side, while “The Fool (Live)” connects the release back to the band's 1982 debut album Shuttered Room.

The recordings date from the 1982–83 period, placing this firmly in The Fixx's breakthrough era, when their blend of guitars, synthesizers and rhythmic new wave was becoming increasingly prominent on both sides of the Atlantic.
