"... From Across The Kitchen Table" is a classic mid-1980s release from Liverpool's "The Pale Fountains", one of the UK's most distinctive melodic indie-pop groups of the era. Issued by Virgin Records in June 1985 as a double 7" pack (VS 750), this four-track release brings together the title track from the band's second album with "Bicycle Thieves", plus "Thank You" and "Just A Girl".
The Pale Fountains were formed in Liverpool around songwriter and vocalist/guitarist Mick Head, developing a sophisticated pop sound influenced by 1960s songwriting, including The Beatles and Love, as well as Burt Bacharach and bossa nova. Their music combined jangly and acoustic guitars, melodic songwriting and, particularly in their early work, distinctive brass arrangements.
The title track comes from the band's second studio album, ...From Across The Kitchen Table, released in 1985 and produced by Ian Broudie, later of The Lightning Seeds. The album was a more unified and polished development of the Pale Fountains' sound, with "Bicycle Thieves" also appearing on the LP. "Thank You" is an earlier Pale Fountains single from 1982, while "Just A Girl" originally appeared as the B-side to the band's debut single "(There's Always) Something On My Mind" that same year.
The release therefore spans the band's early 1982 material through to their 1985 Virgin-era work, making it a useful collector's item for followers of Liverpool indie, C86-adjacent guitar pop, new wave and the wider post-punk British independent scene. It also offers a neat snapshot of Michael Head's songwriting before his later work with Shack.
