The Platters – The Platters Now

A collection of timeless songs from one of the most recognisable vocal groups of the 1950s and '60s, The Platters Now showcases The Platters' unmistakable blend of smooth harmonies, romantic balladry, rhythm & blues, and polished pop. The album brings together a selection of classic standards and popular songs, delivered with the sophisticated vocal style that made The Platters one of the defining groups of the early rock & roll era.

Originally formed in Los Angeles in the early 1950s, The Platters became one of the most successful vocal groups of the era, helping bring doo-wop and R&B-infused vocal music into the mainstream. Led on many of their best-known recordings by the distinctive tenor voice of Tony Williams, the group became synonymous with lush harmonies and dramatic performances, scoring enduring hits including Only You (And You Alone), The Great Pretender, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, and Twilight Time.

The Platters Now takes a slightly different approach, concentrating on interpretations of well-known songs including Who's Sorry Now?, Tweedle-Dee, Love Letters, Young Love, and Wayward Wind. The album also features the group's celebrated rendition of Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, one of the songs most closely associated with The Platters' legacy.

The second side continues with familiar favourites such as Bye, Bye Love, Vaya Con Dios, Kisses Sweeter Than Wine, Sixteen Tons, and Personality, making this an appealing listen for fans of classic vocal harmony, traditional pop, early rhythm & blues, and vintage rock & roll. The UK edition was issued on Contour in 1975, while the title also appeared on Fontana in the Netherlands in 1974.

A great addition to any The Platters vinyl collection, The Platters Now is particularly well suited to listeners who enjoy classic 1950s and 1960s vocal groups, doo-wop, R&B, romantic pop, and the golden age of American vocal harmony.
