The Ritchie Family – African Queens

Released in 1977 on Marlin Records, African Queens is the fourth studio album from American vocal trio The Ritchie Family, delivering an imaginative and richly produced excursion into the golden age of disco. Produced by Jacques Morali, the creative force behind many of the era's most recognisable dance records, the album combines sweeping orchestration, powerful percussion, infectious rhythms and polished female vocal performances.

Best known for their international disco success with records such as 'The Best Disco In Town' and 'The Souvenirs', The Ritchie Family developed a distinctive sound built around dramatic arrangements, lush harmonies and ambitious musical concepts. African Queens continues this approach, taking inspiration from the historical figures Nefertiti, Cleopatra and the Queen of Sheba to create a theatrical musical journey.

The album's extended opening suite, 'African Queens', is its centrepiece. Moving through individual themes dedicated to Nefertiti, Cleopatra and the Queen of Sheba before returning to the main composition, it showcases Morali's flair for combining cinematic arrangements with the driving rhythms of the disco floor. Rich strings, insistent percussion, layered vocals and an infectious rhythmic pulse give the production its unmistakable late-seventies character.

The second side offers three contrasting highlights. 'Summer Dance' is an exuberant, rhythmically driven disco workout, while 'Quiet Village' is a particularly fascinating inclusion. Reworking Les Baxter's celebrated exotica composition, the track transforms its atmospheric, tropical-inspired character into an expansive disco arrangement. It became a major club success, reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot Dance/Disco chart in 1977. 'Voodoo' closes the album with another percussion-heavy, atmospheric dancefloor excursion.

Recorded at Philadelphia's Sigma Sound Studios, the album also benefits from the musical character of the city's celebrated soul and disco recording scene, while Morali's production brings a more international, orchestral disco sensibility to the material.

An interesting and distinctive release from the height of the disco era, African Queens is particularly appealing to collectors of classic seventies disco, orchestral dance music, Philadelphia-influenced productions and the wider Jacques Morali catalogue. Its extended opening suite, adventurous concept and sought-after dancefloor favourite 'Quiet Village' make it a rewarding addition to any serious disco collection.
