Face Dances – The Who

Released in 1981, Face Dances was the first studio album by The Who following the death of drummer Keith Moon in 1978. The album introduced Kenney Jones, formerly of Small Faces and Faces, as Moon's replacement.

Musically, the album marks a shift away from the explosive hard rock and grand conceptual ambitions of the band's 1970s work. Instead, it embraces a cleaner, more contemporary early-1980s sound that incorporates elements of power pop, new wave, and polished rock production. Much of the songwriting comes from Pete Townshend, whose lyrics explore themes of aging, identity, relationships, and modern life.

The album's biggest success was "You Better You Bet," which became one of The Who's most popular later-period singles. Other tracks showcase the contrasting personalities within the band, including songs written and sung by bassist John Entwistle.

Although Face Dances initially received mixed reactions from fans expecting the raw energy associated with Keith Moon, it has since been reassessed as a strong example of The Who adapting to a changing musical landscape while retaining their distinctive songwriting and musicianship.
