U2 – War
War is the third studio album from "U2", released in February 1983 and widely regarded as the record that established the Irish band as a major international rock act. Produced by Steve Lillywhite and recorded at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin, the album has a harder, more direct sound than the band's earlier releases Boy and October, combining driving post-punk rhythms with atmospheric guitar, politically charged songwriting and Bono's increasingly forceful vocals.
The album opens with "Sunday Bloody Sunday", one of U2's best-known songs and a defining example of the band's early political songwriting. "New Year's Day" follows with its distinctive piano and guitar-driven arrangement, while "Seconds", featuring vocals from The Edge, explores the threat of nuclear proliferation. "Like A Song..." and "Drowning Man" demonstrate the band's ability to move between urgent rock and more atmospheric material.
The second side includes "Two Hearts Beat As One", one of the album's major singles, alongside "Red Light", "Surrender" and the closing "40". The latter became particularly associated with U2's live performances, often serving as a concert closer with the audience continuing the song's refrain after the band members had left the stage.
Recorded during 1982, War was released on 28 February 1983 and became U2's first UK No. 1 album. The original UK LP was issued by Island Records as ILPS 9733, and the album subsequently became one of the defining records of early-1980s post-punk and alternative rock.
