Wishbone Ash – Argus

Wishbone Ash – Argus is widely regarded as one of the defining albums of early-1970s British progressive and classic rock, combining soaring twin-guitar harmonies, blues-rock foundations and expansive songwriting. Originally released in 1972, it remains one of Wishbone Ash's most celebrated and influential records.

The album opens with the atmospheric "Time Was", moving from a gentle acoustic introduction into heavier electric passages and showcasing the band's ability to shift effortlessly between contrasting moods. "Sometime World" follows with its distinctive acoustic and electric guitar interplay, before "Blowin' Free" delivers one of the band's most instantly recognisable riffs and a classic example of their pioneering twin-lead guitar sound.

The second side contains the album's ambitious centrepiece, "The King Will Come", featuring dramatic guitar harmonies and an epic progressive-rock arrangement. "Leaf And Stream" offers a more reflective and pastoral moment before "Warrior" and "Throw Down The Sword" bring the album to a powerful conclusion, completing its medieval-inspired narrative atmosphere.

A key part of Argus's appeal is the interplay between Andy Powell and Ted Turner, whose twin-guitar harmonies became one of Wishbone Ash's defining characteristics. Their melodic, harmonised leads would go on to influence countless later guitar bands, particularly within hard rock and heavy metal.

Wishbone Ash occupied a distinctive position in the early-1970s British rock scene, sitting somewhere between Deep Purple, The Allman Brothers Band, progressive rock and folk-influenced British rock. Argus brought all of these elements together into a cohesive album that has remained a favourite among rock collectors and musicians alike.

For collectors of Wishbone Ash, classic rock, progressive rock, hard rock, twin-guitar bands and essential 1970s vinyl, Argus is an absolute classic and one of the band's essential records.
