Counting Crows – August And Everything After
Counting Crows – August And Everything After
August And Everything After is the landmark 1993 debut album from "Counting Crows", introducing the American rock band with a deeply melodic, introspective sound that blended alternative rock, folk rock, roots music and Americana. Released on DGC Records on 14 September 1993, the album was produced by the acclaimed T Bone Burnett and quickly established "Counting Crows" as one of the most distinctive new American bands of the early 1990s.
The album is best known for "Mr. Jones", the breakthrough single that brought "Counting Crows" international attention, alongside fan favourites such as "Round Here", "Rain King", "Omaha" and "A Murder Of One". "Round Here" in particular became one of the band's signature songs, combining Adam Duritz's characteristically conversational vocals with atmospheric guitars and a restless, emotionally searching lyric.
Rather than following the heavier guitar-driven approach associated with much of early-1990s alternative rock, August And Everything After has a warmer, more organic character. Piano, acoustic and electric guitars, Hammond organ, harmonica, bass and percussion contribute to a richly textured sound, while the arrangements leave plenty of space for Duritz's expressive songwriting and distinctive vocal delivery.
The album was recorded during 1993 in Los Angeles, including sessions at the band's home studio as well as Kiva West Recording Studios, Conway Recording Studios, The Village Recorder and Sunset Sound Recorders. T Bone Burnett's production helped shape the album's understated, roots-oriented character, with additional musicians including David Immerglück on guitars, mandolin, pedal steel guitar and mandocello.
With songs such as "Perfect Blue Buildings", "Anna Begins", "Sullivan Street" and "Raining In Baltimore", the album moves between intimate acoustic songwriting and fuller band performances without losing its reflective atmosphere. It remains an important early-1990s alternative rock and folk-rock album, and a defining release in the "Counting Crows" catalogue.
This 11-track CD presents the original album sequence, making it an excellent choice for fans of "Counting Crows", 1990s alternative rock, Americana, roots rock and singer-songwriter-influenced guitar music.
