A standout piece of late-2000s Hospital Records drum & bass, Sick Music Sampler 1 brings together two hugely respected productions from Danny Breaks and Sigma. Released in 2009 as NHS153, this 12" was the first vinyl sampler from Hospital's Sick Music campaign, previewing the label's forthcoming compilation with two of its most anticipated tracks of the year.

The A-side features Danny Breaks' Logistics Remix of Volume One, revisiting the seminal Vol. 1 associated with Breaks' influential Droppin' Science label. Logistics gives the old-school jungle classic a thorough modern production treatment, retaining its raw breakbeat energy while bringing it up to the standards of the late-2000s Hospital sound. Hospital itself described the remix as an updated take on an old-school anthem that was already causing serious dancefloor reaction before release.

Danny Breaks is an important figure in the history of British hardcore, jungle and drum & bass. Originally emerging from the early-1990s rave scene as Sonz Of A Loop Da Loop Era, he went on to establish Droppin' Science and became closely associated with highly percussive, experimental jungle production. His work helped bridge the early hardcore sound with the tougher, more technical jungle and drum & bass styles that followed.

On the AA side, Sigma's Paint It Black delivers a very different but equally effective take on modern drum & bass. Built around prominent horn lines, energetic breakbeats and a strong melodic hook, it became one of the defining Sigma tracks of their early career. Hospital noted at the time that the track was already receiving major Radio 1 support from Annie Mac and Mistajam, helping establish Sigma as one of the new-school drum & bass acts to watch.

The pairing makes this a particularly appealing Hospital Records 12": one side connects directly to the old-school jungle and Droppin' Science heritage of Danny Breaks, while the other represents the fresh, polished and melodic sound that was emerging from Hospital in the late 2000s. Both tracks later appeared on the full Sick Music compilation, cementing this sampler's place in the label's catalogue.
