Gary Numan – Living Ornaments '80

Gary Numan – Living Ornaments '80

Captured live at London’s Hammersmith Odeon on 16 September 1980, Living Ornaments '80 documents Gary Numan during a defining period in his career, as his stark, futuristic synth-pop sound was making a lasting impact on British new wave. Originally released in 1981 on Beggars Banquet, this concert recording brings the precision, tension and atmosphere of Numan’s electronic compositions to the live stage.

Built around icy synthesiser textures, driving rhythms, dark melodies and Numan’s distinctive vocal delivery, the performance showcases material from his influential early albums. “This Wreckage” opens with brooding intensity, while “I Die : You Die” and “M.E.” highlight the mechanical pulse and unsettling atmosphere that became hallmarks of his sound. “Everyday I Die” and “Down In The Park” deepen the set’s darker mood, balancing futuristic electronics with a raw live edge.

The second side moves between the urgent energy of “Remind Me To Smile”, the intricate synth patterns of “The Joy Circuit” and the stark momentum of “Tracks”. The set reaches its conclusion with “Are 'Friends' Electric?” and “We Are Glass”, two signature songs that capture Numan’s gift for combining memorable hooks with an alien, distinctly modern atmosphere.

An essential document of Gary Numan’s early live era, Living Ornaments '80 is a compelling listen for fans of classic synth-pop, electronic music and British new wave.
